Innovations and Developments in Telecommunications Services and Internet Services

The innovative Internet has done it again -- a free hearing test on the net!!  It may be fun to try it out, but QC SHHH highly and strongly recommends regular visits to a licensed and certified audiologist regardless of what your internet hearing test may reveal!!  The link for the free hearing test is: http://www.freehearingtest.com/core.shtml

Ultratec is moving forward with a captioned telephone project, called "CapTel".  The unique captioned telephone which limits the need for a relay service is currently being test marketed in several states, and other states are constantly being added.  It is expected to be available to the general public during the summer of 2003.  To learn more about this great new device, visit the following site: http://qcshhh.tripod.com/madison.htm   You can also visit the CapTel site at the following link: http://www.ultratec.com/info/CapTel.html   Finally, you can learn more about CapTel from the Federal Communications Commission at http://ftp.fcc.gov/cgb/dro/ultratec_petition.doc

The era of remote CART captioning is upon us.  Learn more about this innovative method of captioning a meeting or conference by visiting www.c-s-d.org.  CSD is affiliated with Sprint Telephone Company.

Viable Technologies is another company that provides remote captioning, but only for educational settings.  VTI can be found at
http://www.viabletechnologies.com/index.html

Three (3) internet telephone relay services are now available for use.  Sprint Internet Relay can be found at www.sprintrelayonline.com  AT&T is offering internet relay service at http://relay.att.com  WorldCom, the first to offer internet relay can be found at www.ip-relay.com   Give it a try!!  They all work fairly well especially when you do not have access to a TTY, but do have access to a computer with an internet hook-up.

Video Relay Service (VRS) is now available through Sprint Communications and CSD.  VRS can be found at www.usavsr.com  The service does require that you have a high speed computer and a web cam.  It is also very helpful to be rather good in sign language if you intend to use the service.

Closed-Captioned Web Conferencing Capabilities -- Web Conferencing Company becomes first to meet ADA compliancy, enabling hearing-impaired users to take advantage of E-Learning Innovations.  Read the full story from PR Newswire at the following link: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/10-31-2001/0001605393&EDATE
